Unwired - News About GPS, Wi-Fi, RFID, Bluetooth - Jun-01-2006 June 1, 2006
Here are some summaries related to wireless technologies (GPS, Wi-Fi, RFID, Bluetooth) for Jun 1, 2006:
- Qualcomm recently announced a single chip - the first of its kind - that handles three different mobile TV broadcast standards, including FLO, DVB-H, and ISDB-T [via Wireless IQ] With a growing number of cellular providers offering streaming TV on mobile phones, Qualcomm will have a definite edge over other manufacturers. Qualcomm’s share price has been increasing steadily over the past year, with a few minor dips.
- As small as the circuitry in RFID tags has become, printed circuits open up even more application opportunities, as they can be applied directly to packaging materials and other surfaces, possibly clothing. Full printed RFID circuitry is not yet in production, but antenna circuits are. This market is expected to take a decade to build up. [via Wireless IQ]
- Loki is a “local web” search service with which you first identify your “exact” geographic location and are then able to use their web search to find points of interest nearby, such as specific types of stores. This is a killer app I’ve been talking about since the early 1990s, before the Internet went public. It’s nice to see that someone has finally made a real attempt at it. The software is a plugin for the Firefox and IE web browsers (currently Win XP only; Linux + Mac coming) and uses Wi-Fi triangulation to determine your location (currently USA only). What surprises me is that they didn’t take the initiative to make this a piece of software for smartphones and mobile PDAs, which already have Wi-Fi access. What a better platform for such a service? Sort of the Wi-Fi equivalent of GPS navigation systems.
- On the various Star Trek TV series, tracking the location of ship crew members is simple for the main computer. At BP (formerly British Petroleum), they plan to build an RFID-based application to track the whereabouts for 3,000 workers at their Washington state oil refinery - on the premise of safety reasons. - Due to high gasonline prices, some manufacturers are turning back to the railways to transport goods. As a result, a small market has opened up for RFID-enabled railcar tracking. [via RFID Journal]
