Managing Your Life With Rich Internet Applications March 18, 2006
According to Jep’s Rich User Interfaces blog, the KIKO online calendar application is ranked number one amongst Ajax (Asynchronous Javascript and XML) RIA (Rich Internet Application) apps. (The ranking is actually from Dan Grossman’s Ajax apps list.) I’ve been reviewing online calendaring systems lately and have come across a few nice apps (30 Boxes and RSS Calendar).
While I settled on 30 Boxes a few weeks ago, I’m liking KIKO’s features. I haven’t signed up yet, but KIKO has some incredibly appealing features, good for the global traveller. For example, I’m on the go enough that I splurged recently and replaced my standard cell phone with a PalmOne Treo 650 smartphone. According to KIKO’s specs, I can store a number of events, then have it email or message my Treo as reminders.
Personally, I think that’s great. It’s easy for me to come up with a big to-do or appointments list. But I often get overwhelmed with a big list and end up ignoring it. As a result, my organizing activities become ineffective. This way, I can store all details, but only concern myself with the immediate details.
Now as my short-term memory tends to be a bit faulty, it’s possible that 30 Boxes and RSS Calendar can do the same things as KIKO. However, if they can, it wasn’t immediately obvious to me. With the increasing lack of time I find (or don’t) in my life, I find myself going with the obvious, with apps that make usage a no-brainer.
