Card Technology print magazine reports that network providers the world over are getting ready to offer mobile phone users a new way to pay for their airtime. This spells the end of those scratch cards you can purchase in different denominations.

Anyone who currently sells these cards for the tiny margins they offer can this revenue stream goodbye as soon as the end of this year in some parts of the world. Robot Bugs? You’re Kidding, Right?

From the “It’s Not April Fool’s” files… On the front cover of yesterday’s Globe and Mail newspaper (Canada) is a small headline about the Pentagon developing cyborg insects. These miniature cyborgs would be real bugs, with electronic devices inserted into them at the larval stage. The idea is to be able to control them remotely.

Sounds crazy? I seem to recall coming across one web page late last year where Japanese scientists were demonstrating how they could control the musculature of a woman. In fact, they could remotely control her arms and legs.

So I’m surfing the net and I come across this great big showy press release about a Japanese company acquiring PalmSource, the spinoff company that’s behind the PalmOS operating system for various mobile devices and PDAs. Seems the company is part of a group dedicated to creating a Linux enivronment on mobile devices, as well as a development environment for anyone wanting to writing code for mobile Linux.

There are some excellent articles over at Treonaut giving a number of cost-saving tips for your PalmOne Treo. Overall, this is a great resource if you own a Treo, or even just a PalmOS-based PDA or smartphone. My fave article is the one showing you how to create your own ringtones at no cost. The article talks about the 3 different file formats you can use, and how much space they take up, which free software tools to use for creating the ringtones from your favourite songs, and so on. This is definitely worth a read.
